Honorary AW---"George the Crook"
George owned the Cafe Acores in Praia near Lajes Field in the Azores. George was quite the political scoundrel at times and had to leave the islands for his own health. He always regaled us with his magic tricks and his fine bottles of mateus. Sadly, George passed away in 1983. He left behind a wife and a son. Contributed by John Meyers |

In tribute to Hank Caruso's Aircrewman AW1 Kevin Kennedy has modified the world famous Hank Caruso's aircrewmen artwork to include this version that adorned the HSL-37 Aircrew shop in 1994. Kevin's version includes a "hidden" image of a world famous bunny (and it is not Bugs or the Everready bunny) as well as an H-60 helo. Hank Caruso's original aircrew image is copyrighted. Please visit his site to learn more about Hank!!! Contributed by AWCS(Ret.) Randy Gillet |

Crossing the Beach at Normandy Being stuck in Cornwall, UK doing IUSS with my 4 other AW compadres, we get the chance to visit some places not normally on the deployment paths. Last year my in-laws came over for a visit and we took the ferry to France and had a nice 2 week journey all over western Europe. We spent 3 beautiful sunny days in Normandy where we visited all of the D-Day beaches and WWII memorials. These moving pictures are taken at the American Cemetary overlooking Omaha Beach, where Saving Private Ryan filmed the cemetary scenes. I cannot fully describe this somber place. There are 9,386 white crosses and Stars of David on this green landscape. Navy, Army, Air Force and Marine servicemen everywhere. Not even a drop in the bucket of the actual dead servicemen in Europe, but completely overwhelming. Another 1,557 names are inscribed on a wall behind the huge Memorial building and chapel itself. Even though the Navy has taken me to more places than I can count over the last 11 years, this had to be the most moving experience of my life. Anyway, these are just a few of the pics we took and I thought that some people might enjoy seeing what freedom actually cost our country. Hope you enjoy them! Contributed by AW2 (AW/NAC) Jon Scott |
